BEHIND THE CURTAIN

BEHIND THE CURTAIN

We rarely think about what is behind a performance. How many people does it take to build what the audience sees in a few hours? A few hours with months of work and labor behind it, and not just by those we see on stage. Lighting, sound, set design, costume design, staging, ballet... long and exhausting rehearsals of orchestra, soloists, performers, ballet dancers... Everything that is only on stage for a moment to make it just right and to convey the right message requires so much that often goes unseen by the viewer.

In the past month, the people of Ruse had the precious opportunity to be the first to see a number of innovative performances of the Ruse Opera, for which the response was thunderous. Opera lovers filled the halls and paid well-deserved tributes to all involved.

And behind the curtain and in the niches were those professionals whose names you won't see in the posters, not because it's wrong, but because it's not a common practice. And people are there to do their job, flawlessly at that, they are there to create with joint efforts a perfect picture for the drag spectator. Those people who run at light speed during rehearsals, are forever tangled in various wires, have their noses stuck in tablets and phones with which they control all sorts of equipment from a distance, make the necessary adjustments in no time, are there long before the show starts and stay long after it is over. Those details that many of us don't notice as separate structures are actually whole organisms without which a truly good show would not be possible.

In March, Russians will have the opportunity to attend another premiere, behind the organization of which are people who are recognized in their professions, people who love their work and polish everything to the smallest detail. State Opera - Ruse will present the opera "Summer 893" on March 27, exactly 50 years after the first performance, which was also on the stage of the then Ruse National Opera, again within the International Festival "March Music Days". This performance was also dedicated by the Ruse Opera to the 1130th anniversary of the Preslav Church-People's Council - the historical culmination of the Conversion of the Bulgarian people. In the main roles you will see soloists of the State Opera - Ruse, directed by Plamen Beykov, who since December 2006 is a soloist, since 2018 is also a playwright, and since 2022 - director of the State Opera - Ruse. Costumes and set design are by the brilliant set designer Denis Ivanov, and the short content can be found here.

A little earlier in March, namely on Thursday the 16th, the State Opera - Ruse is preparing another premiere. A ballet written by a world-class conductor - Maestro Emil Tabakov! Few people know that he is also a composer and has two more ballets behind him: 'Sasha', written in 1967 and 'Elena of Pristis', 1969. His latest work is dedicated to his hometown Ruse and its first performance will open the 62nd edition of the International Festival "March Music Days". The premiere concert of his new ballet "Kaliopa", written in 2022, will be performed on 16.03.2023 in the Great Hall of the Ruse House at 19.00.

The team of the State Opera - Ruse wishes an unforgettable and full, and even oversaturated with emotions month to all fans of opera and ballet art. A month often associated with the feminine turbulent nature, a month of awakening, of rebirth, a month of beginnings (once the first month in the calendar)! A month to honor the past in new ways, but with an old and zealously held passion and love for the native and the true!

And behind the curtain? Behind the curtain, everything will be happening in fast-forward, invisible to the eyes of the draughty viewer, who will be able to sink peacefully into the timelessness, a sensation made possible precisely by those alive and awake, and forever sleeping, wired sound engineers, lighting technicians, ushers, directors, set designers, costume designers, ballet masters, concert masters, chorus masters, accompanists, seamstresses, designers and those cool guys who pull the curtain!
