The New Generation of Bulgarian Composers

The New Generation project gives young composers the opportunity to be heard, recognized and acknowledged, to express their ideas and share them with audiences and colleagues. In addition, the audience has the unique opportunity to enjoy new, fresh and innovative musical works that reflect the spirit and creativity of the new generation of Bulgarian composers.

The concert programme "New Generation", composed entirely of works by Bulgarian composers of the last generation of Bulgarian compositional creativity, can only be a priority of the Ruse Opera Orchestra, which in symphonic programmes comes out with the trademark - Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra. The special selection of the programme was made by Dimitar Kosev - the Chief Conductor of the State Opera - Ruse. The project seeks to become a living demonstration of continuity in the creative circles of the Bulgarian school of composers. It clearly shows what are the trends in the creative search of the composers of the new generation of Bulgaria.

With the accumulation of creative and professional experience, they already have an established handwriting and their goals and intentions seem to have already found their clear horizons. The clearly delineated personalities demonstrate a positive trend in the development of contemporary Bulgarian musical art - a liberal attitude towards genre diversity. In this way, the figures of the composers of the new generation become easily recognizable for the Bulgarian audience.

Angel Zaberski Jr. graduated from the National Academy of Music "Prof. П. D. Tupkov in 1996. He worked as an arranger of the Bulgarian National Radio Big Band (1996-2000). Since 2000 he has been teaching improvisation at the NBU.

The New Generation of Bulgarian Composers

He is an accomplished musician, with numerous appearances on Bulgarian National Television, Bulgarian National Radio, private radio and television stations. He has worked with young and prominent pop and jazz singers, played in jazz clubs. Angel Zabersky Jr. has performed in America, Germany, France, Spain and other European countries. In 2001 he performed with the Ankara Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1998 he created a jazz trio with which he participated in many festivals in Bulgaria. In 2000 he founded a jazz octet. Under his conducting the octet participated in various concerts and prestigious festivals. The 15 pieces he wrote for the ensemble are included on his first solo CD. In 2003 he created a big band of young musicians, with which he performed at the Bankya and Apollonia festivals with his own compositions.

Angel Zaberski Jr. is the winner of the Crystal Lyre 2002 in the Jazz category.

His work is related to orchestral and jazz music. He arranges and composes jazz pieces and symphonic music. He has written dozens of compositions and arrangements for big band and symphony orchestra.

Veli Chaushev was born in Kotel, where he also graduated from SMU "Filip Kutev" with a degree in Tambura. He is a graduate of AMTII "Prof. Assen Diamandiev - Plovdiv with the specialties Instrumental Art and Composition in the class of prof. Dimitar Tupkov. He has won national and international awards both as an instrumentalist and as a composer of instrumental pieces, songs and chamber works. He released his first original CD "Life is Music" (2014), participates in instrumental ensembles and creative projects that achieve a combination of genre and style musical diversity. After 2019 Veli Chaushev launched his work as a composer in the field of symphonic music with the debut of his work Bulgarian Roots in collaboration with the Sofia Philharmonic. Veli Chaushev is a teacher of chamber music, tambura and is the accompanist of the folk singing specialty at the National Academy of Music. Lyubomir Pipkov.

Dobromir Kisov is a composer, orchestrator, multi-instrumentalist and music producer. As a composer of music for concerts, theatre, cinema, contemporary dance and various stage and media events, his music has been performed in Bulgaria, England, the Netherlands, Russia and Japan. He has written arrangements and compositions in a series of educational concerts with the intrumentalists of the prestigious Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. His arrangements with symphony orchestra for the AHAT anniversary concert with special guest Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow).

In 2022 his work "Hand Variations" for symphony orchestra was presented in Bulgaria Hall in the first edition of the initiative "New Generation" within the festival "Sofia Music Weeks" with the Ruse Philharmonic. Dobromir's music also took part in the great Hungarian festival Sziget, 2018, and in 2021 his overture was performed live with a symphony orchestra within the Sofia Summer Fest.

Dobromir was awarded the Audience Choice Award at the "Sounds like you" competition, organized by Classic FM Radio, NMA "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov" and Huawei Bulgaria. He was awarded a special prize for song arrangement by the German music company ADAM Audio, a Golden Coin and a certificate for Honorary Status of Young Leader in Music Art.

In November 2022 Dobromir Kissov presents the premiere of his suite for string quintet "Pre-Jivian", recorded in Studio 1 of the Bulgarian National Radio - Sofia.

Emelina Gorcheva-Dimova was born in Veliko Tarnovo. She completed her secondary education at the National University of Education "Prof. Lyubomir Pipkov" with a degree in Piano. She studied composition in the class of prof. Yovcho Krushev at NMA "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov". In 2017 he obtained the educational and scientific degree of Doctor. He has won 11 prizes for composition, 6 of them international. He is the author of 7 musical-stage works realized on the Sofia stage, including the musicals "Enough", "The Little Prince", the first Bulgarian musical-theater black comedy "The Heir", the ballets "The Song of the Planets" and "The Colors of the Night". She has composed film scores, symphonic and chamber-instrumental works, solo and choral songs, piano miniatures, and concertos. Some of her works have been performed in the USA, Germany, Estonia, France, Luxembourg, Greece and Bulgaria. Her concerto for marimba, piano, percussion and string orchestra "Immense Worlds", co-written with Miroslav Dimov, has gained wide popularity beyond the borders of the country - it was performed in Strasbourg, within the Bulgarian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. It was followed by premieres in China, Australia, the USA, Japan, London, Venezuela. In 2022 he composed the music "Boryano, bulgarian" for the world champion in rhythmic gymnastics Boryana Kalein. Currently Emelina Gorcheva - Dimova is a senior assistant at the National Academy of Performing Arts "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov", lecturer in the disciplines "Chamber Singing" and "Dramaturgy and Interpretation - Working with a Composer".

The New Generation of Bulgarian Composers

Yordan Vladev is a composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. He graduated from the Academy of Arts in Sofia with a degree in Sculpture, then studied Composition and Musical Aesthetics at the NMA "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov. He has participated in many master classes in composition and improvisation. He is currently studying Psychology at the NBU. He is the author of songs, film, ballet and theatre music, choral, chamber and orchestral works, many songs for children, arrangements of folk music from around the world, etc. As a versatile musician, he has worked with a variety of ensembles - pop and rock groups, jazz and ethnic formations, choirs, children's ensembles, as well as with a number of Bulgarian and foreign artists, in whose projects he has participated as producer, performer, composer, arranger or tone director. He has performed in Bulgaria, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Greece, Serbia, Macedonia, Turkey and South Korea. In 2010 he founded the Art Libitum Music Center, a private music school developing and practicing innovative methods of music education for professionals, children and amateurs. An essential part of the center's activities is working with people with various physical or mental disabilities.

Yordan Vladev is the founder and artistic director of Youth Jazz Fest Sofia. He has released 15 original albums, as well as participated in numerous projects of other artists. He has won awards for composition. He is also a three-time winner of the prize for best teacher.

Konstantin Kostov works in the field of modern jazz. He creates original music combined with folk elements, as well as reworkings of classical works in the style of jazz. He completed his musical education at the Munich Academy of Music under prof. Leonid Cizik. Since 2008 he has been teaching at the same Academy.

He has performed on many world stages and international festivals throughout Europe and Asia.

He has released a total of four solo albums and has recorded with many other prominent musicians. In recent years, he has worked with Polish musicians, also for the Polish Television Polsat. He has played with world famous musicians such as Robby Ameen, Gregory Porter and others. Recently he premiered a music video made by Polish director Olga Czyzykiewicz with his music, which won first place at the Audioshoot International Music and Film Festival for the song "Genesis" performed by singer Agnieszka Hekiert. This year he released an album "M.Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition for Jazz Trio", featuring Hristo Yotsov and Dimitar Karamfilov.

Kostadin Genchev was born in Gabrovo. He is a graduate of SMU "Filip Kutev" with a specialty in Kaval. He has won the 2005 ASKERE awards for theatre music with the BULGARA group and the Second Prize of the National Competition for writing a symphonic work in irregular rhythms "7/8". In 2016 she graduated from the National Music Academy "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov" with a degree in Composition in the class of Prof. Krasimir Taskov.

His career as an orchestrator in various folklore formations began in 1990, and from 1993 until today he has been a soloist-orchestrator, composer and arranger in the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Music Orchestra. Since then Kostadin Genchev is the author of over 1000 arrangements of folk songs and over 100 instrumental pieces written especially for this ensemble. He has composed for television films and theatre performances, for a performance by Neshka Robeva, for folklore performances, for the popular vocal ensemble "Eva Quartet", for the Ensemble "Chinari", etc. His chamber symphonic music is performed by the Classic Art Strings Quartet and Ensemble. He is the winner of the Golden Muse Award of the Association of Bulgarian Choreographers for the best original music for a dance performance.

Petya Toncheva was born in Burgas. She finished her secondary education at the music school in her native town. She studied composition at NMA "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov" under prof. Alexander Raichev and prof. She studied with Prof. Alexander Ryachev and Prof. Alexander Tanev. Since 1991 he has been a theatre composer at the first private theatre "Dialogue". At the same time he works as a composer at the State Travelling Theatre and as a vocal teacher at the theatre studio "4 X C". He writes music for many theatre plays performed in Sofia and the country.

He has written children's, theatre, chamber and popular music. He has won awards in the competitions "Melody of the Year", "Silver Eros", "Golden Orpheus +". He has also participated in the competitions "Burgas and the Sea", "Golden Blackbird" and "Sweet Lark".

In 2021 he won second prize in the Prof. It was also the premiere performance of her works with the Sofia Philharmonic and Sofia Soloists.

In 2022 he won the Third Prize for his trio "Let the Birds Go" inspired by "Intermezzo per tre" by Lazar Nikolov at the Ardenza Foundation Competition. In the same year he won the Special Prize of the Ninth International Composition Competition "Prof. Ivan Spasov". Since 2011 she has been working at NUMSI "Prof. Ivan Spass". Pancho Vladigerov" - Burgas as a teacher of solfège and conductor of the string orchestra at the school.

Plamen Tsvetanov is a Bulgarian pianist and composer. He is a graduate of the school of prof. Milena Kurteva and Iliya Lozanov. He graduated from NMA "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov in the classes of Borislava Taneva and Teodora Nestorova.

He has performed as a soloist both at home and abroad - at The Holburne Museum - Bath (England), Warminster Athenaeum Centre - Warminster (UK), at the Smetana Museum - Prague. In 2022 he was a guest soloist in the concert to the masterclass of the Finnish conductor Sascha Mäkilä. As a composer, he created a number of piano pieces, orchestral works and chamber works. As a composer of theatre and film music he has won awards in Greece, Belgium, Russia, Turkey and Montenegro. He is the author of the music for the digital presentation on Bulgaria's accession to the European Union. In 2020 he will release the first of a series of CDs with his film and theatre music. Plamen Tsvetanov is the author of the music for 18 animated films, two feature films, 20 theatre productions, one musical and piano works. He is currently writing the music for a feature-length film musical. As a pianist, he is also preparing a series of concerts that are expected to be realized in 2024.

Stefan Totsev was born in Pleven, where he graduated from the Geo Milev Mathematical High School. He studied music in private guitar and solfege classes, then studied at the New Bulgarian University and received a bachelor's degree in computer music. There he also completed his master's degree in composition in the class of prof. Georgi Arnaudov. He is the author of the comedy musical "Pub for Two" and is currently working on his next big project - an operetta, part of which is the presented work "Ode to Life".
