Such is Figaro - the tireless driving force behind the events in *The Barber of Seville*, the man who, with a smile, resourcefulness, and boundless energy, turns every obstacle into an adventure.
On June 7, the stage of the Dohodno Zdanie will come alive to the sparkling melodies of Rossini, and the Ruse audience will welcome guest soloist Svilen Nikolov in the role of the beloved barber - an artist for whom Figaro is not merely a role, but a long-time stage companion. After dozens of encounters with this charming character, the singer continues to discover new nuances, new smiles, and new sources of inspiration in him.
Before the performance, we spoke with Svilen Nikolov about his connection to one of the most beloved opera characters, his creative collaboration with the team at the State Opera – Ruse, and about that magic of the theatre that turns every performance of “The Barber of Seville” into a true celebration for the stage and the audience.
How do you approach the role of Figaro in this production of "The Barber of Seville", and what new aspects are you exploring in this role compared to your previous interpretations?
Figaro is a role I’ve been performing almost since the beginning of my professional career, and one that continues to thrill me - just as it has thrilled audiences for hundreds of years. Over time, one discovers new nuances and new reasons to love this character. Although this is my first time participating in this production by director Alexander Mutafchiev, the role is so familiar to me that it feels like an old friend joining a new group. It will be interesting to see how my Figaro comes to life in this different theatrical world.
How does your work as a guest soloist with the Ruse State Opera influence the production of the show, and what does this creative collaboration bring you?
For me, this is a very pleasant reunion. I was part of the previous production of "The Barber of Seville" in Ruse, and I’ve worked with many of my colleagues on other operas as well. This creates a sense of trust right from the very first rehearsal. I’m joining the production as a guest, but I feel like I’m among friends and partners with whom I speak the same theatrical language.
What would you like the audience to feel and take away with them after seeing your Figaro in this production?
Above all, a good mood. The appearance of "The Barber of Seville" on any theater’s program is always a cause for celebration. It is a work that brings joy to both the audience and the performers on stage. I hope the audience leaves with a smile, fond memories, and the desire to return to the opera soon.
What do you find most fun or "craziest" about this role?
Perhaps it’s because Figaro is always one step ahead of everyone else and constantly coming up with new solutions. Sometimes there’s such a whirlwind of misunderstandings, intrigues, and botched plans on stage that you find yourself thinking: “This is pure theatrical chaos!” But just then, Rossini’s genius brings everything together in the most entertaining way possible.
