The title of the cantata Carmina Burana ("Secular Songs") comes from Latin: Carmina – meaning songs or poems, and Burana – referring to the medieval monastery of Beuern (today Benediktbeuern) in Bavaria. The textual and dramatic foundation of Carl Orff’s work is the 13th-century manuscript Codex Buranus, a poetic collection containing works by medieval wandering singers and poets – goliards, troubadours, and minnesingers – who traveled and performed throughout Europe. Codex Buranus is a unique blend of secular medieval poetry, rich in themes of love, the meaning of existence, religion, and morality, often filled with passion, brilliant humor, and tough satire. The vibrant, energetic orchestration – shimmering with timbral variety – provides a stunning accompaniment to the brilliant performances of the choir and soloists. Carmina Burana is like a musical time machine – through the force of its passions, it transports the listener back through the centuries to relive the emotions of our ancestors.
