In the year marking the 175th anniversary of the world premiere of "Rigoletto", the Ruse Opera brings this tale of love and a curse to life under the starry sky of Veliko Tarnovo.
On July 3 at 9:00 p.m., amidst the majestic atmosphere of the historic Tsarevets Fortress, as part of the 11th summer opera season of “Stage of the Centuries,” the Ruse State Opera presents a new interpretation of Giuseppe Verdi’s exceptional work, which has been thrilling audiences for a century and a half with its psychological depth. Based on Victor Hugo’s play “The King Amuses Himself,” the opera tells the harrowing story of the father and jester Rigoletto, his daughter Gilda, and the frivolous Duke of Mantua.
Following its premiere in Ruse, the production will come to life on the open-air stage in Veliko Tarnovo. Director Nina Naydenova, set designer Elitsa Georgieva, and costume designer Yana Dvoretska have created an impressive visual world inspired by the spirit of the Renaissance.
The vocal and acting prowess of the Ruse Opera Company will transport the audience to an era of court intrigues. In the leading roles, the audience will see established and beloved performers: Rigoletto – Dobromir Momekov, Gilda – Daniela Karaivanova, The Duke of Mantua – Mihail Mihaylov, Sparafucile – Momchil Milanov, Maddalena – Gloria Pencheva, Giovanna – Tatyana Kamilova, Monterone – Deyan Kostadinov.
The performance is conducted by Maestro Dimitar Kosev. The powerful and moving choral score is performed by the Ruse Opera Theater Chorus, conducted by Steliana Dimitrova-Hernani, with Konstantin Dimitrov serving as concertmaster of the orchestra.
