Stoyan Popov - Exhibition in Philharmonic Hall

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the birth of the award-winning Bulgarian baritone Stoyan Popov, the State Opera-Burgas in partnership with the State Opera-Ruse presents a photographic exhibition in honour of one of the most hard-working and persistent opera artists.

The exhibition is located in the foyer of the Philharmonic Hall in Ruse and is free of charge for visitors.

As a "Pope's son" when the time came for his compulsory military service Stoyan was sent to the labour troops where he actively participated in artistic activities.

Stoyan Popov's path to the big stage began in his youth - in 1954 he became part of the Ensemble of the Construction Troops in Sofia and his first appearance as a soloist was then on the stage of Bulgaria Hall.

After the barracks, Popov returned to Burgas where he worked at the Burgas Copper Mines "Rosen" after graduating from the First Male High School in Burgas. He first appeared as a chorus boy in the local amateur opera and over the years Popov took on roles such as Dr. Grenville in La Traviata, Dr. Bartolo in The Barber of Seville, Schonar in La Boheme, etc. He continued his education in Sofia, after which he returned in full force to the shy Burgas. His repertoire includes the thunderous roles of Georges Germont from La Traviata, Count di Luna from Il Trovatore, Zurga from The Pearl Hunters and many others.

"Every role for me is a fairy tale that I never want to end. I put my heart and soul, love and sincerity into it. I burned in these roles" ( quoted in "STOYAN POPOV", 4pp.).

The project was realized with the financial support of the National Fund "Culture" under the "Programme for the restoration and development of state, regional and municipal cultural institutes".
